How do you design a column as per IS 456?
We design a column as per the following steps:
Determine its design life
Assess loads on column
Determine which combinations of loads will apply in column
Assess durability requirements and determine concrete strength
Check cover requirements for appropriate fire resistance period
Calculate min. cover for durability, fire, and bond requirements
Analyse structure to obtain critical moments and axial forces
Check slenderness
Determine the area of reinforcement required
Check spacing of bars
How do you calculate pillar size?
The pillar size is calculated using measuring tape.
Which MM rod is used for the pillar?
It depends upon the area of steel which has to be provided, and that depends upon the load to which the column is subjected to.
How many TMT bars are needed for a pillar?
For a rectangular-shaped pillar, 4 bars are needed and for a circular pillar, a minimum of 6 bars are required.
What is the formula for RCC in a design of column?
The axial Load carrying capacity column is arrived at based on the formula;
P_u\ =\ 0.4f_{ck}A_c\ +\ 0.67f_yA_{sc} as per IS 456-2000.
