Question
Download Solution PDFState True/False for the following statements:
1. Pony motors are used for starting of synchronous motors.
2. Damper windings are used for starting of 3-phase induction motors.

A synchronous motor is not a self-starting motor. It can be started in the following ways:
Using an Auxiliary Motor (Pony motors):
- A small auxiliary motor (often a pony motor) is used to bring the synchronous motor up to near synchronous speed. Once the synchronous motor reaches a speed close to its synchronous speed, the DC field is excited, and the synchronous motor locks in with the supply frequency.
Damper Winding:
- Damper windings are special short-circuited windings placed in the pole faces of synchronous motors.
- Damper windings act like a squirrel cage rotor of an induction motor and produce torque to bring the rotor close to synchronous speed. Once the rotor reaches near synchronous speed, the DC excitation is applied to the field windings, and the rotor locks into synchronous speed.
- In synchronous machines, sudden load changes cause oscillations in rotor speed (known as hunting). Damper windings dissipate these oscillations by producing damping torque, stabilizing the motor.
Therefore, Statement 1 is True while Statement 2 is False.
