The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (Act) has prevented a wide range of offenses against the Scheduled Castes and Tribes. 
  • This Act may be called the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. It came into force on 30 January 1990. 
  • But the rules for the Act were notified on March 31, 1995.
  • The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act is popularly known as POA, the SC/ST Act, the Prevention of Atrocities Act, or simply the Atrocities Act.
  • These special courts (established under the Act) work to protect the rights and privileges of the victims and assist them in receiving relief.
  • According to the SC/ST Act, protection is provided for social disabilities.
  • The Scheduled Castes and Tribes have emerged as one of the most progressive communities of Indian society due to their educational, economic, and social empowerment. 
 Thus, it is concluded that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was enacted in 1989.
