Rise and Fall method provides a check on intermediate sight whereas the Height of Instrument method provides a check on Back Sight and Fore Sight only.

 Some of the characteristics of contour lines are as follows : 
The distance between them indicates the steepness of the slope.
They do not cross each other except in special cases like overhanging cliffs.
Irregular contour lines signify rough terrain and uniform contour lines signify smooth terrain.
In concentric contour lines, a higher value inside shows a hill and a lower one indicates depression. 

Back sight is the first reading taken after setting up the instrument, Fore Sight is the last reading before shifting the instrument station and all other readings recorded between these two are called Intermediate Sight.
