Concept:

When R = 1 Ω, 4 Ω is in series with it.

4 Ω + 1 Ω = 5 Ω

Now, 5 Ω || 20 Ω

\(\frac{20 \times 5}{20+5} = 4 ~\Omega\)

At the end, 4 Ω in series with 2 & 12  Ω

So, 4 + 2 + 12 = 18 Ω
