Thermal Efficiency

The ratio of heat equivalent of mechanical energy transmitted to the turbine shaft to the heat of combustion of coal is known as the thermal efficiency of the steam power station.

The efficiency of the boiler of the steam power plant is the thermal efficiency.

1 kWh = 3.6 × 106 joules

1 kWh = 36 × 105 joules

Overall Efficiency

Overall efficiency = Thermal efficiency × Electrical efficiency

Overall efficiency = Boiler efficiency × (Turbine efficiency × Generator efficiency)

The thermal efficiency of a modern steam power station is about 30%.
