Rani-ki-Vav was originally built on the banks of the Saraswati River as a memorial to the King in the 11th century AD.
Over time, they evolved from what was essentially a sandy soil pit to multi-storey works of art and architecture.
Rani-ki-Vav was designed at the height of craftsmanship in the construction of steppes and the architectural style of Maru-Gurjara, reflecting the mastery of this intricate technique and the great elegance of detail and proportions.
The construction is attributed to Udayamati(daughter of Khengara of Saurashtra) queen of the 11th-century Solanki dynasty and spouse of Bhima I.
It was rediscovered in the 1940s and restored in the 1980s by the Indian Archeological Survey. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.
The Reserve Bank of India has issued a Rs 100 note in lavender color having a motif of 'Rani Ki Vav' on the reverse.
