Largest Ocean in The World? Oceans Name, Area and Location
IMPORTANT LINKS
The Pacific Ocean is the biggest and deepest ocean in the world, spanning nearly one-third of Earth’s surface and covering around 162 million square kilometers. Bordered by Asia and Australia to the west and North and South America to the east, the Pacific is not just vast but historically significant—it is the oldest ocean basin, dating back over 200 million years.
Its immense size means it can fit all the Earth's landmasses inside it, with space to spare. The Mariana Trench, the deepest known point on Earth, lies within the Pacific and plunges over 36,000 feet. With an average depth exceeding 13,000 feet, it also supports rich marine biodiversity including whales, dolphins, turtles, coral reefs, and thousands of fish species.
More than just a natural wonder, the Pacific Ocean plays a vital role in global trade, climate regulation, and cultural connections across continents. It features unique geological formations like volcanoes, island arcs, and mountain ranges, and is a critical part of the global ecosystem.Keep reading to explore more about the world largest ocean in the world, how it compares with other oceans like the Indian Ocean, and where it stands in the list of the top 10 largest oceans and seas on Earth.

Which is the Largest Ocean in the World?
The world's largest ocean is the Pacific Ocean. It is the biggest of Earth's five oceans, both in terms of its surface area and its volume. The Pacific Ocean stretches across approximately 63 million square miles (165 million square kilometers), covering more of the Earth's surface than all the other oceans combined. It is also the deepest ocean, with the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific being the deepest point on Earth.
The Pacific Ocean is so vast that it borders many countries, including the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, China, Australia, and numerous island nations in the Pacific region. Its immense size and influence on climate and ecosystems make it a critically important part of the Earth's environment.
The 'Ring of Fire' is defined by a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, island arcs, and volcanic mountain ranges and/or boundaries of several plates. It encircles the periphery of the Pacific Ocean Basin.

How did the Largest Ocean of the World or Pacific Ocean Get its Name?
The Pacific Ocean got its name from the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. He was the first European to sail through the ocean, which he did during his voyage around the world from 1519 to 1522. When Magellan and his crew entered the ocean after navigating the treacherous waters around the southern tip of South America, they encountered a vast expanse of calm, tranquil waters. In contrast to the rough seas they had experienced earlier in their journey, Magellan called this new ocean "Mar Pacífico," which means "peaceful sea" in Spanish and Portuguese.
The name "Pacific Ocean" was later adopted by other explorers and mapmakers, and it has since become the universally recognized name for the world's largest and deepest ocean.
