The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) releases details of the UPSC IFS Eligibility Criteria along with the official notiifcation. Candidates aspiring for the UPSC IFS exam must ensure that they fulfil all these requirements before applying for the examination. UPSC IFS Eligibility Criteria 2025

Candidates need to know about UPSC IFS Eligibility Criteria because the registration process will be strictly based on the eligibility criteria. A person who is not eligible and still registering for the examination will be marked ineligible, leading to disqualification from registration. Hence, candidates are requested to read through the mentioned eligibility criteria below.

UPSC IFS Age Limit

The UPSC IFS Eligibility states that a candidate should be a minimum of 21 years and her/his age should not exceed 32 years. The age limit is relaxed for the reserved category applicants.

UPSC IFS Age Relaxations

The UPSC IFS age limit is relaxed by a few years for candidates belonging to the reserved categories. Details of the same are presented in the table below.

UPSC IFS Educational Qualification

The UPSC IFS Eligibility Criteria states that the candidates must have the following educational qualifications.

Completed their 10 + 2 Secondary Education in science or biology. 
The candidate should have a bachelor's degree from a recognized University/board in India. The graduation must be in one of the following subjects:

  • Animal husbandry and veterinary science
  • Botany
  • Chemistry
  • Geology
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Statistics
  • Zoology
  • Agriculture
  • Forestry
  • Engineering. 

Nationality

UPSC IFS Eligibility Criteria also mentions nationality for candidates who want to register. A candidate registering for the examination should be a citizen of India as the priority. They can be a subject of Nepal, Bhutan, or a Tibetan Refugee who has immigrated to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanent residence. 

A person migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, and Vietnam and is now permanently settled in India.

Candidates from these countries other than India should have an eligibility certificate from the Indian Government to apply for the examination under any case.

Number of Attempts

UPSC IFS Eligibility Criteria is very particular about their criteria, and candidates should strictly follow them. There is also a maximum number of attempt limits elevated in the examination for candidates who cannot clear the examination at one attempt.
